PADIHAM could win a share of a £2.5 million regeneration jackpot -- to help develop its role as a vibrant market town, serving surrounding rural communities, say council chiefs.

Development agency chiefs have agreed in principle to a "health check" being carried out in the town to press home the need for regeneration cash.

Padiham is one of only 15 towns in the North West selected for the checking process, which could lead to major cash investments from 2002 to 2005.

Lisa partnership behind the town's bid said: "We are hoping this initiative will help kickstart investment for Padiham in a three year action plan."

Local councillor Gillian Harbour said: "This is really good news for Padiham -- and we all need to work together now to develop and create a vision for a stronger future for Padiham."

The healthcheck process for Padiham would involve setting up a partnership with representatives from Padiham and the surrounding rural area; gaining community involvement; identifying key issues facing the town; creating a vision for Padiham and developing an action plan for improvements.

If the bid receives backing then match funding would flow into Padiham from the North West Development Agency and Countryside Agency.
