SCHOOL children gathered at Preston College this week for its annual Hockey Play Day organised by second year BTec Sports Studies students.

More than 500 children from 20 schools made up 40 teams for the two-day event.

The event was planned by a groups of students as part of the their Hanson Leadership Award, and they had to plan the activities, invite and liaise with the schools, check the health and safety regulations and run the event smoothly on the day.

Sharon Walker, a member of the group said: "It went really well. We taught them hockey skills in the morning and they had a team competition in the afternoon. Everything ran smoothly.

"We have this Hockey Play Day every year and get a massive turnout. The schoolchildren really enjoy it and they get certificates of achievement at the end."

Winners on the first day were Roebuck County Primary School and second day winners were Harris Primary School.
