A SUPER-FIT Preston man is celebrating after completing a prestigious Ironman athletics challenge.

Daniel Banks, 30, of Woodlands Avenue, Bamber Bridge, entered a triathlon competition comprising of swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles, then running a marathon, 26.2 miles -- without a break.

In the past he had only ever run one London Marathon -- making him a novice compared to fellow athletes in the competition. He said: "When my friends heard what I was going to do they thought I was mad." The contest was a qualifying event, held in Lanzarote, on May 26 with the winners off to race in Hawaii later this year alongside qualifiers from all over the world.

Although Daniel didn't make it to Hawaii, he did complete the contest a respectable 204th out of 850 contestants.

He said: "It was hard work, especially with the heat and wind. Only 610 people finished the race.

"And I was competing against very experienced athletes."
