MORECAMBE shot up to second place in the Northern Premier League with an impressive victory over top of the table Netherfield.

The news for Lancaster was worse however, as they slumped to second from bottom of the table after defeat at Leyland and Farringdon.

Morecambe dominated their clash with the reigning champions at Woodhill Road, clocking up a solid total of 216 for five after batting first.

Leading the scoring was opener Amol Muzumdar, who hit 60. He was ably supported by Andy Bird, who hit 46 in a useful innings.

Morecambe were just as good with the ball, knocking their visitors from Kendal all out for 80. Their best bowler was Patel, who took five wickets for 55.

Former Blackpool man Rudra Singh, who joined Morecambe after leaving the Stanley Park club, took the wicket of Welbourne and as well as making 13 runs with the bat as Netherfield fell to their first defeat of the season.

At Leyland, opener David Heywood put Lancaster in contention with an excellent opening stand of 65.

However, Leyland pro Martin Van Jaarsved made life difficult for the Lancastrians, taking 4-13, including the key wicket of Heywood, meaning Lancaster were able to take just 151.

Lancaster never recovered from an excellent start to the Leyland innings which saw Munaf Bavla and Neil Rimmer share a partnership of 70, before Van Jaarsved arrived on the scene, taking his side to a victorious total of 154 runs for just two wickets.

Morecambe's second string managed to follow their first team's example in beating Netherfield, while Lancaster's division two campaign was also boosted by victory over Leyland.
