A BURY business is celebrating 50 years of working with one of the country's leading leisure chains by undertaking a major refurbishment on its doorstep.

Walshaw-based Garnett and Hilton, which employs 40 staff, won the contract to transform a Manchester building into a 1,000 capacity live entertainment bar.

The venue, which is owned by entertainment giant Luminar Leisure, is branded as Jumpin Jaks and is set to open its doors this month.

Garnett and Hilton, located in Bank Street, began fitting out dance halls in the early 1950s and are still working with the same chain half a century later, an achievement of which managing director Ray Hilton is proud.

"We specialise in the leisure industry and have been leading main contractors in that area for decades," he said. "It's been fantastic to undertake work for the same chain and it highlights the adaptability and market knowledge of both companies.

"The Jumpin Jaks concept is a completely unique one and it is great for us to have a hand in creating new outlets. They are prestigious jobs."

He went on: "We were involved in creating the very first Jaks and to see such a national enthusiasm for the venues makes us very proud.

"We have been involved with Jaks outlets across the coutnry but it will be great to have a permanent reminder of our successful relationship with the chain so close to home."

Jumpin Jaks brand manager Trevor Ellard believes that Garnett and Hilton have played a major part in the phenomenal success of the chain.

He said: "Although many nightspots operate to a similar template both in appearance and policy, Jaks is completely mould breaking.

"To develop a concept like that, you need the main contractor to be completely on-stream with the thinking and Garnett and Hilton certainly are."

He added: "It is a great testament to them that they are still so highly respected within the industry and I'm sure Manchester party-goers will see why as soon as Jaks opens."

The Manchester Jumpin Jaks will be the eleventh in the chain and is being developed in the city's Portland Street.
