A BURY organisation has a lot to shout about after celebrating its inaugural year.

Bury People First (BPF) was set up just over 12 months ago and is going from strength to strength in its bid to help people with learning difficulties stand up for their rights and give them a voice.

The group also runs Speak Up groups where people can learn to self advocate.

BPF is supervised by two development officers but the majority of decisions and events organised by the group are dealt with by a committee of 15 learning disabled members. It is funded by Bury social services and Bury Health Authority.

Publicity officer and committee member, Mr Selwyn Telzer, said: "Without Bury People First, people with learning difficulties in the borough would not have a voice. Our aim is to let our views be heard. "Over the past 12 months we have held three conferences, three parties and organised trips out for members. We also provide training courses on a variety of issues."

He added: "One of the most exciting things that we are doing at present is the Equal People Course. This was designed by Mencap and is an Open University course for learning disabled adults.

"Eleven people are doing the course at the moment and a further five are due to start the course soon."

BPF is currently based at the William Kemp Heaton Day Centre in St Peter's Road, Bury. The office is open most Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
