A PE teacher has finished in the top 10 of a gruelling command course completed by an international field of candidates.

Fred Longworth High School teacher Joanne Laverty passed the prestigious Territorial Army programme run by the military college at Shrivenham partnered by senior police officer Peter Driver.

Joanne, 35, runs the 42 (North West) Brigade's Presentation Team having trained and served as a TA Royal Artillery officer.

Passing the course is essential for those seeking to command regiments and it also identifies future commanders.

Joanne said: "It is probably the most gruelling course that we have ever completed. Our military knowledge has greatly improved and we feel honoured to have been taught by the best instructors the British Army has to offer.

"We were thrilled to finish in the top 10 of 63 candidates including people from Canada, Germany and France."
