LOVE was in the aisle for one Burnley couple when they turned up at a supermarket Valentine’s Day singles night.

And just seven months after retired college lecturer Peter Smith and Margaret Haworth’s eyes met across a crowded cafe at Asda in Burnley, the pair were shopping for wedding rings.

The couple actually got together on Friday the 13th (of February) but insist that while the fated day might be unlucky for some, it has certainly smiled on them.

Peter and Margaret were inseparable at the speed dating event but it was only when he plucked up the courage to ask events co-ordinator Michelle Holmes for his new paramour’s phone number that the first signs of romance were kindled.

Not many 66-year-olds go on their first date to see Chumbawamba but a bond was forged over the Tubthumping band’s rabble-rousing anthems at Burnley Mechanics and they have never looked back since.

Peter said: “There was a spark there then because we agreed to see each other again.

Margaret added: “I hadn’t got a clue who they were but Peter had seen them before so I went along!”

Ardent Claret Peter also persuaded Margaret to see her first Burnley game, towards the back end of last season, and now they have adjoining season tickets at Turf Moor.

In fact, following their Burnley Register Office wedding, next August, they plan to hold their reception, for family and friends, in the James Hargreaves Suite at the ground.

Recalling their first meeting, widower Peter said: “It was a like a game of pass the parcel, except you didn’t take the top wrapper off. But Margaret and I just keep on talking.

“We found we had a lot of things in common, like a similar taste in music.”

The couple were presented with a special engagement cake by staff at Asda, baked for them by Michelle ‘Bella’ Roberts, and were treated to a bottle of bubbly.
