Burnley death crash prompts call for action by councillor

A DAD-TO-BE’s death on a notorious stretch of road in Burnley has prompted calls for urgent safety work.

Borough councillor David Heginbotham is demanding that new speed warning indicators should be placed along Burnley Road, Cliviger.

His call comes after 36-year-old motorcyclist Paul Brabazon was killed in a crash on Saturday.

The tragedy is the second involving a biker in recent months on the A646, with keen rider Jamie King losing his life at nearby Portsmouth last June.

Motorcyclists often use the route at weekends with a biker cafe, on the outskirts of Todmorden, a popular hang-out for enthusiasts.

Mr Brabazon, an engineer, had been riding his Ducati bike with a group of fellow riders, just before 9.30am, when he attempted to overtake a Renault near a layby.

But he lost control of his bike and was thrown off, sustaining serious injuries, according to road police.

Mr Brabazon, of Littleborough, near Rochdale, was taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital but died a short time later.

Last night his widow Emma said: “Paul was a devoted husband, soon to be a father and a much-loved brother.

“He lived life to the full with bikes and sporting activities.

"He was the life and soul of the party, successful in his career and always strived for the best.

“With all his fantastic caring qualities, he would have been the most amazing dad.

"Paul will be sorely missed by all his family and friends.”

An investigation has been launched by the road policing unit based at Colne, led by Sgt Tracy Ward, who has appealed for witnesses.

Sgt Ward said: “Even the smallest pieces of information may be important as I discover exactly what happened on Saturday morning.

“This is a most distressing time for Paul's family and we have specially trained officers supporting them.”

Coun Heginbotham said that funding should be made available by Cliviger Parish Council for new speed indicators.

“This is an issue which I have brought up at the parish council before - we need flashing speed indicators which are solar-powered,” he said.

“There is one on Barden Lane in Burnley, I believe, and they do work. If people see these flashing lights then they automatically slow down.

“The last three deaths I can think of on this road have all involved motorcyclists and we need to do something about it.

“They come out of Todmorden, under the railway bridge, and open out their bikes. It is like a little Isle of Man TT track.””

Coun Heginbotham says he will raise the issue at July’s parish council meeting.

Witnesses to the Cliviger crash can call Sgt Ward on 01282 472431.

most people ride motorbikes so they can ride very fast - simple as that. no amount of speed calming measure will stop people riding too fast and getting killed. i have a bike, like riding fast and know that if I am unlucky with traffic or make a mistake I will come off and probably die. most deaths on country / fast roads are single vehicle accidents caused by speed. sad but true. councillors looking to get headlines calling for speed calming measures should tell it like it is and be honest.

they should say that if you drive to fast you get what you deserve.

A tragic accident, but why is the road being blamed? The motorcyclist overtook a car and lost control of his machine. A road is as safe as you make it, a motorcycle that can accelerate almost as quickly as an F1 car with a top speed nearer 200mph than 100mph is a tragedy laying in wait for the slightest mistake.

You do not lose control of a motor bike if you are going at 30mph. Don't blame the road.

As I have said many times in this column "The faster you are in this world, the sooner you will be in the next"
The only prize for going too fast, is a free afternoon out with the undertaker.
It's his widow who deserves our sympathy, our prayers are with her on her loss.

Councillor Heginbotham refers to the speed warning on Barden Lane. I live near there and a lot of motorists seem to take it as a challenge to light up the sign before they hit the bridge.

sad as any life loss is if you want to race a bike then take the consequences .The road is not to blame where do these people put their brains ???You could argue that the roads are now a little safer.

May I first of all offer my sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Branazon.
After reading the comments, I wish to point out that I did not blame the road.
What I did say, that I felt that further safety measures could possibly be introduced, to help all road users.
There are times when deaths have been caused to third parties, who unfortunately have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Has anyone considered what may have happened, if a pedestrian, had been in the way.
My views remain as they were. I feel that measures should be in place to help remind all road users of the dangers of excessive misuse of their abilities.

The speed limit is clear. If you choose to ignore it the fault is yours. Why waste taxpayers money on idiots who insist on driving too fast.

Although I am very sad to hear of the death of this young man, I agree with David Heginbotham that something must be done urgently about speeding on this road. What about pedestrians, like myself, who have small children attending Cliviger school and church? Zebra crossings should be made across from the school and in Walk Mill - not purely for the safety of pedestrians but also to calm the speed of traffic. People who live in Cliviger have been requesting this for many years - why not just do it!
