COUNCIL bosses have denied that regeneration efforts in the Whitefield area of Nelson are in jeopardy.

Blueprints to revive the fortunes of the district have been scaled back after R.Gen, the borough council’s chosen partner, failed to convince English Partnerships that their proposals were financially secure.

Former councillor Mahboob Ahmed, at a meeting of the authority’s Nelson committee asked if R.Gen had pulled out of the scheme but was told by council directors that work was still ongoing to make their scheme viable.

Borough councillors have approved a separate scheme, funded by the authority itself, to refurbish two blocks in Every Street.

Original plans would have seen 100 empty homes revamped, a new community centre and 80 new homes.

It was in jepardy the moment the plans were drawn up. The area is a disgrace at the moment, and you can bet your mortgage that within 12 months of having millions of tax payers money spent refurbishing the area it will be back to the dirty horrible state that it is in now, completely disrespected by the local inhabitants.
