A police dog managed to sniff out a man hiding in a bush after he sped off in a stolen car.

PD Rufus was on patrol in Brierfield this morning with two human officers when they spotted a blue BMW which had previously been stolen from an address in Nelson.

The vehicle was signalled to stop but the driver instead made off, reaching up to 50mph in a 30mph zone.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle but eventually caught up to it on Marsden Road where it had collided with a parked car.

The driver made off on foot, but Rufus sprung into action and in no time at all sniffed out the man who was hiding in some undergrowth between Kibble Crescent and Carlyle Street.

A 20-year-old man from Nelson was arrested at the scene on suspicion of aggrevated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, and failing to stop. He remains in custody.

A police spokesperson said: "The lesson here? You can't escape our four-legged colleagues and their super-sniffing powers."
