New Pendle mayor plans bright future for youngsters

3:05pm Friday 16th May 2008

PENDLE'S new mayor looked to the future as she took over the reigns at the annual mayoral ceremony yesterday.

Coun Shelagh Derwent, taking over from Coun Alan Buck, will be looking to raise money for young people's groups and clubs, the Pendle Samaritans and the Air Ambulance.

In a speech, Coun Derwent, a retired business woman who has been a councillor in Pendle for 18 years, looked forward to the completion of the Arts, Culture and Enterprise Centre, Nelson's new bus interchange and the start of flagship major housing renewal schemes.

The first citizen of Pendle said: " I really think there are not enough facilities for young people and we have to do a lot more for them."

Coun Marjorie Adams was also sworn in as the deputy mayor at Nelson Town Hall yesterday afternoon at 4pm.
