Pendle Borough Councillor and House of Lords life peer Lord Tony Greaves has died aged 78.

Emergency services were called to Hartington Street in Trawden just before 10am on Tuesday, after receiving reports of a sudden death.

We can now confirm that the body found in the property was that of Lord Tony Greaves, who sadly died at his home in the village.

Lord Greaves was a long-serving councillor, sitting on Lancashire County Council, Colne Borough Council and subsequently on Pendle Borough Council, on which he retained his seat up until his sudden passing.

Lancashire Telegraph:

On social media, the Liberal Democrat group in the House of Lords said: "We are so sad to tell you that our very own Tony Greaves died earlier today.

"Whilst we are shocked at the suddenness of it, we remember a real Liberal hero whose contribution to local and national politics over many decades has been massive.

"Salutes, Tony - you will be missed."

Residents in the area say they saw three ambulances and two police cars outside a property, with a coroner's van arriving shortly after 11.30am.

Lord Greaves' next of kin have been informed.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called to Hartington Street in the Winewall area of Colne at 10.20am on March 23 to reports of a sudden death.

"Emergency services have attended and sadly a man in his 70s was found dead.

"His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be passed onto HM Coroner in due course."
