A MAN who answered his door naked after becoming "sick and tired" of Hallowe'en trick or treaters has been placed on the sex offenders' register for two years.

William James Andrews was also given a conditional discharged for two years after pleading guilty to exposure at Burnley Magistrates.

The court had previously heard that Andrews had opened the front door to his house on Bowness Road, Padiham, to two girls aged 14 and 10 after taking off his clothes.

The girls, who were wearing Hallowe'en costumes, told him they were trick or treaters and he went inside to get them cash.

But they went home and told their parents who contacted police.

Sue Campbell, prosecuting, had previously told the court the two girls went to the defendant's house on October 15, knocked on the door and he opened it naked.

Mrs Campbell said Andrews told police he was trying to scare the children away because youngsters were calling at his house too often.

Geoff Ireland, defending, said the girls were of tender years and wouldn't have been impressed by Andrews' conduct.

He said Andrews had been "constantly harassed" by children in the area and he was perhaps seen as some kind of target.

Andrews' mother died fairly recently and he felt somewhat vulnerable, according to Mr Ireland.

He continued: "He was sick and tired of it and went to the door and exposed himself.

"He accepts that would clearly have disturbed the children."

The solicitor said the incident had not deterred local children as they were still calling and asking him for money.

Andrews was sentenced after a previous hearing was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

At that hearing the chair of bench has said that Andrews' behaviour had been intentional and could have caused the girls significant harm.

Andrews was also ordered to pay £60 costs.

Not the actions of a "normal" person in any case and I think the reason behind answering the door naked (sick of callers) is a load of bull ***t!

I don't know,mumof3;I generally answer the door naked to Jehovah's Witnesses, offer them a 'good time' and jiggle by bits at them;it generally keeps them away...'Trick or Treaters' are better got rid of with a 'Scream' mask and a very large butchers knife...

Trick or treat on October 15th, when did trick or treaters knock on your door a fortnight before the event? Sounds more like demanding money with menaces. Looks like the Police prosecuted the victim as usual. No, he shouldn't be answering the door without any clothes but people tend to get desperate when no-one listens to them.

The girls, who were wearing Hallowe'en costumes, told him they were trick or treaters and he went inside to get them cash. If he was sick of Halloween callers then why did he (after answering the door naked)go inside to get them cash? He sounds to me nothing more than a perv

We do not condone the behaviour of Mr Andrews which was unacceptable but judging from the report in the Citizen this case may have been yet another abuse of the legal process. I don't have much sympathy for Mr Andrews but the law must be used correctly.

It is very worrying that many in the legal system just assume that any likely sounding offense must be applicable to nudity. This is not helped by the offence being called "Exposure" as there is no offense of nudity. The offense he was charged with is intending to cause fear, alarm or distress by means of exposure of the genitals. Unless the prosecution showed that there was intent, and there is nothing in the article to show that they did, then he should have been aquitted on that charge. However there are other offenses that he may have committed and of course we only have the information that was in the newspaper article.

We always advise our members to get really good legal advice where nudity is concerned. Unfortunately many in the legal system do not have the experience or knowledge required.

It was October 15th . Last time I looked Halloween was October 31st. What is a "halloween costume" anyway? A mask? A witches outfit? So if I walk into the nearest off-licence wearing a Freddy Krueger mask and demand cash it'll be OK because it's only halloween? Or were they wandering around Padiham dresssed as pumpkins two weeks before the event. Something stinks in this case. This man has been targeted by teenagers demanding money on a regular basis (as heard in the case). He shouldn't expose himself in this way but my point is that he is the one in need of protection and the law has let him down.
On another point, it's about time the Autumn begging season was done away with. Kids these days have all they need anyway without begging in the street terrorising the elderly into giving them money.

Why are young children allowed to go knocking on strange man's doors alone at night in your country?

What kind of a sick tradition is this, anything could happen to them, its like the kids saying to peodophiles 'dont come look for us, we'll come to you'.

Borat, you got it wrong mate. It's a two way thing.

Reminds of the time I delivered a parcel to somebody (in Barnoldwick) and she opened the door in a towel (just out the shower) then the towel slipped off revealing all. I was threatened with prosecution (by the police at the depot) for being a 'peeping tom' even though I couldn't help being stood there. But I had a bl00dy good look at the mighty fine figure.

The person said I pulled the towel off... yeah, I was holding a 6ft wardrode kit (30kg) with one hand and the movement and manoeuvrability of a slug, when I reached out with the other hand.
