A RUBBISH fire spread to the roof of a house on Sunday.

The rubbish was set alight at an empty house in Keighley Avenue, Colne just after 11pm, and quickly spread to the building's roof.

A passer-by called fire-fighters, but police said the fire could easily have spread to other, occupied houses if it had not been spotted so soon.

Sergeant John Fryer, of Colne police, said: "Fires like this are often set by kids who don't realise how quickly fires can spread and how serious the consequences could be.

"It's quite worrying that anyone has been doing this sort of thing and we would like to find out who is responsible, because we don't want them to do this again - we might not be so lucky next time."

He asked anyone with information about the fire to contact police on 01282 425001, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
