FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning about tumble dryers after a fire which they said would have had serious consequences if it had been in a house.

A crew from Nelson Fire Station attended the blaze in Smith Street in the town, at 3pm yesterday, when bed sheets in a tumble dryer, which was in a shed adjacent to the property, caught fire.

The dryer was severely damaged, as was the shed and there was light smoke damage to the house.

Watch manager Tom Ashworth said that preventative measures could be taken to help stop tumble dryer fires.

He said: "Tumble dryers should not be left unattended and the filter should be emptied every time it is used.

"If this fire had been in the house it could have been far worse."
