THE former home of one of Scotland's most famous junior football clubs is set to be transformed into 80 homes in a £10.5million development.

North Glasgow Housing Association has submitted a planning application to Glasgow City Council to build the flats on land in Southloch Street, where Petershill Juniors FC used to be based.

Petershill Juniors was formed in 1897 to represent the Springburn and Townhead areas. Since then the Peasy' have won 100 honours, including the Scottish Junior Cup five times.

The Southloch Street site has been empty since Petershill Juniors moved into an adjacent site in Adamswell Street in 2007, as part of the £6.1m Petershill Community Initiative.

The initiative included completely rebuilding the club's home ground, with a floodlit full-size Uefa approved synthetic pitch and 500-seat stand.

Other facilities include six floodlit 5-a-side football pitches, a gym and fitness centre, dance studio, function suite and cafe bar, and a 15,000 sq ft business centre.

If the proposed development for Southloch Street is given planning permission it will give a mix of 60 flats for rent, including 20 for people with a range of special needs, and 20 for low cost home ownership.

The 20 homes available to buy on a shared equity basis will be sold through the Scottish Government's LIFT scheme, which offers eligible buyers up to a 40% grant.

Robert Tamburrini, chief executive of North Glasgow Housing Association, said: "These homes would bring further good quality housing to the area and we are looking forward to developing the proposals in partnership with the local community over the coming months.

"The project forms part of the wider regeneration of Petershill and will further support the Petershill Community Initiative."

Councillor Allan Stewart, chairman of the Petershill Community Initiative, said: "I fully support the long-term regeneration of North Glasgow and welcome the association bringing forward these plans, which will make a real difference to the community.

"Over and above this, the development will also benefit the construction industry by safeguarding and creating jobs, which is vitally important given the current financial climate."
