PASSENGERS heading towards Colne on the train had their journey disrupted by a thug who assaulted the driver.

The attack happened on the 5.19am Blackpool South to Colne service yesterday before the train had left the station.

The driver continued his journey to Preston, where he was forced to stop to recover from his ordeal, Northern Rail spokesman Gemma Colley said.

An investigation has been launched by the British Transport Police (BTP).

The attack and subsequent delay had an effect on journeys for passengers, both on the 5.19am and later services.

The 7.19am Blackpool South to Colne service was cancelled.

The 5.31am Colne to Blackpool South service terminated at Preston, and the 9.23am Colne to Blackpool South started from Preston.

A BTP spokesman said: “We are aware of an allegation of assault at Blackpool South railway station shortly before 5.20am on Monday. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
