A PAPER mill which produces tissues for customers across the UK has been praised by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg for its commitment to young workers.

Stubbins-based SCA has been named one of the top 100 apprenticeship employers in England by the National Apprenticeship Service and City & Guilds.

The Stubbins Vale Road firm has seven apprentices on the books, four of whom started their employment last September, and 60 across their 1,800 strong UK workforce.

Praising the leading lights, Mr Clegg said: “I would encourage more businesses across England to follow these shining examples and find out how apprenticeships can help them build a skilled, motivated and highly-qualified workforce.”

Site manager John Kirwin said: “The investment we’ve made in our apprenticeship programme is an integral part of our long-term approach to inspiring and training young people to become the engineering leaders of tomorrow.”

“The programme has made a significant contribution to the development of our workforce and we are delighted it has received such national recognition.”

SCA acquired the Stubbins site from Georgia-Pacific in 2012.
