COMMUNITY campaigners are celebrating a victory after convincing County Hall bosses to slash the speed limit on a ‘danger’ road.

Residents in Wilton Street in Barrowford have been successful in their fight to get councillors to reduce the 30mph speed limit to 20mph.

Initially, Wilton Street was one of the residential roads in East Lancashire which Lancashire County Council had decided not to include in the county-wide 20mph programme.

But residents have long been complaining about speeding motorists and had even enlisted the help of Pendle MP Andrew Stephenson and Barrowford councillor Linda Crossley to fight their case.

The street leads to a recreation ground as well as the Barrowford Youth and Community Centre, meaning that it is used by a large number of non-residents.

It also means that the street is busy with children and young people and residents are concerned that the area is an ‘accident waiting to happen’.

Council chiefs have now finally acknowledged the dangers and agreed to install the new 20mph signs in the ‘problematic’ street from April 2015.

Coun Linda Crossley said: “I am delighted that following residents expressing their views, the County Council has agreed to look at putting 20mph signs up.

“This should reduce speeding on Wilton Street and make it an even more pleasant street to live on.”

Andrew Thornton, who lives in the street, said: “Some people drive way past 20mph – especially when they’ve got their music blaring out or they are rushing to the nursery or are late for football.”

Andrew Stephenson MP said: “I am pleased that Wilton Street residents have been listened to and I hope the new restriction and signage will be introduced without delay.
