Two cars were believed to have been involved in the accident, which left one man, believed to be in his 40s, trapped.

A spokesman for the Northwest Ambulance Service said: “One casualty was extracted from the vehicle. A male in his 40s had suspected fractures to his left lower arm and left leg.”

“The road is completely blocked.”

Fire service spokesman John Taylor said: “One caller said there was a fire, but there wasn’t. It may have been steam from a radiator.

“However, there was a man trapped at one point, and fire crews from Burnley and Nelson were involved in releasing him.”

A spokeswoman for the Highways Agency said officers were working to release trapped traffic.

She said: “We were called to a two-car incident at 4.08pm, just before the Burnley (Central) and Padiham exit at junction 10. We are hoping to set up a diversion to release traffic up and over the junction, to minimise delays.”
