PEOPLE in East Lancashire have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to catch a glimpse of two Lancaster Bombers flying over the region this weekend.

In an historic tour of the UK, VeRA, a bomber owned by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, has flown to England to team up with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster.

MORE TOP STORIES:

The planes are the last two airworthy Lancasters in the world.

Lancasters are perhaps best known for their use in the historic Dambusters raids of 1943, when the RAF’s 617 Squadron used ‘bouncing bombs’ to destroy dams that helped power German industrial plants in Ruhr.

And on Sunday at 3.15pm, while en route from Prestwick in Scotland to RAF Coningsby, the bombers will fly over Thwaites’ Star Brewery in Penny Street, Blackburn, and then on to the firm’s new site at Mellor Brook.

The fly-over is part of the UK tour sponsored by the Blackburn brewery which brews the popular Lancaster Bomber ale.

Steve Magnall, Thwaites’ managing director, said: “We couldn’t be more excited to see VeRA fly over Blackburn.

“It will be very special to see her soar over Lancashire and we hope people in the region will join us in raising a glass in honour of those who gave their lives in the name of our freedom.”

Let’s hope the weather is fine so we’ll be able to see them as well as the sound of those engines roaring. They will probably use the Leeds Liverpool Canal to help guide them there where part of the canal overlooks Blackburn station and is very near ‘Thwaites’ so maybe that’s the best place to see them?

Thanks to Lancashire Telegraph for letting us know!

Always one idiot who has no idea of the importance and historical place these amazing machines have in this fantastic countries recent past.

I for one will be waiting to see and hear these magnificent machines as they pass over, whilst at the same time sparing a thought for the exceptionally brave people who flew in these and lost their lives for their countries honour during the War.

They have had trouble with an engine and are in the process of borrowing one from the Battle of Britain flight.

It is a shame it is cloudy as I would have liked to see them fly over.

But on a + side it will make Thwaites aware of cloudy ale, another point is they advertise saying brewed using Lancashires finest water and then sell us midland water that makes the ale taste terrible.
The quicker they get this Mellor brewery sorted the better then we can all go back to an enjoyable pint.
