IT’S a game which requires the deadly accuracy of Danny Ings or Jordan Rhodes.

But rather than testing out budding footballers’ ability on a normal pitch, this new sport will see would-be strikers taking shots on the country’s golf courses.

FootGolf — which sees competitors follow the rules of golf as they kick a football down the fairways — claims to be the ‘fastest growing sport worldwide’.

It made its Lancashire debut at Mytton Fold Golf Club in the Ribble Valley yesterday, with former Blackburn Rovers striker Kevin Gallacher and England ladies’ international Fern Whelan in town to declare the course officially open.

Barbara Bryan, the golf club’s director, said: “We will be the first golf club in Lancashire to offer FootGolf.

“With the Ryder Cup just around the corner and the football season upon, it’s an exciting time for the hotel to be introducing FootGolf.

“There has been lots of interest and bookings are pouring in — everyone is excited about this sports opportunity.”

Everton Ladies’ defender Paige Williams also attended the launch, although Burnley-born England goalkeeper Rachel Brown was forced to pull out at the last minute.

This looks brilliant, and you couldn't get a more British sport unless you found a way to include cricket bats and cups of tea!

What a stupid idea. Who ever thought of this. It seems to me to be for those not good enough for football and not good enough for golf. True golfers will think it is a stupid idea. Trust Mytton Fold to jump in with this. Mind you the course isn't fit for golf!!!

Well you sound sufficiently arrogant enough to be a golfer.

It's progress mate, like WindSurfing or Snowboarding, just because your grandfather didn't do it doesn't mean it's wrong, just people having fun.

Went and played this yesterday. Absolutely brilliant it was. We did 9 holes then went for refreshments (quick pint) then did another 9. I will be playing a lot more and I will be looking for more courses to try out in the future. 10 out of 10.
