ONE Burnley FC punter who put his money where his mouth is has made the Lancashire Telegraph’s deputy sports editor eat his words.
Lifelong Claret Matt Donlan poured scorn on those who saw great things ahead for Sean Dyche’s men in the Championship last season.
And he wrote that ‘anyone who claims that they did should be able to produce their betting slip’.
Telegraph reader Mr A Ashworth, of Venables Avenue, Colne, could afford to raise a smile - and produced photographic proof of his successful 14-1 wager, placed with Betfred, on Burnley earning promotion.
In a letter, he said: “I must have been one of those who half-expected it to happen (or saw it coming). At least I had a laugh to myself when I read your article.”
Mr Ashworth may be £150 better off as a result but he would have really been in the money if his side bet placed at the same time, on the Clarets winning the title outright, had come in at 50-1.
