EAST Lancashire schools have been shortlisted in the finals of a competition to find ways of making schools better places.

Schools which have been shortlisted for the final of the Chairman’s Challenge will visit County Hall to celebrate the challenge’s 10th anniversary.

This annual event with the Chairman of Lancashire County Council encourages innovative ideas to make schools healthier, greener and safer.

County Coun Michael Devaney, chairman of Lancashire County Council, has announced the 20 finalists.

Finalists include Brunshaw Primary, Burnley, Wheatley Lane Methodist Primary, Fence Mayfield Specialist School, Chorley, Pendle High School, Nelson and Cribden House Community Special School, Rawtenstall.

Also on the final list are Duke Street Primary School, Chorley, Astley Park School, Chorley, The Family Tree Centre, Brierfield and St John with St Michael CE Primary School, Shawforth.

Youngsters from the schools will head to County Hall on Wednesday, May 14 to make a presentation in front of the judges and try to take the title of Chairman’s Challenge Champions 2014.

The winning schools will each receive £1,000 towards their activities.

The chairman will be joined on the judging panel by senior county councillors, health representatives, school advisers and young people from across the county.
