Plea to residents in ‘save Brierfield Town Hall’ bid
CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Brierfield Town Hall from closure are urging residents to attend a public meeting tomorrow.
The town hall is due to shut at the end of June, and the future of Brierfield Community Centre also remains uncertain.
The moves come as Pendle Council looks to make savings to ensure it receives a £1million efficiency support grant from the Government.
Town hall chiefs had pledged to review the future of their community halls as part of a deal to receive the grant.
Trawden Community Centre was also threatened with closure at the end of June, but residents have come together to form a committee to try to take over the running of that venue.
Coun Yasser Iqbal, mayor of Brierfield, said: “The town hall and community centre are two iconic buildings at the heart of our town.
“I would urge anyone interested in helping to save our buildings to attend the meeting.”
Coun Mohammed Hanif, a Reedley borough councillor and a Brierfield town councillor, said residents would come together and do what they could to save the buildings.
He said: “It is a fact that the cuts imposed on Pendle Council by the Tory Government are forcing closures of community buildings.
“The people of Brierfield will come together to save our centre and town hall. The town council won't abandon Brierfield, unlike the Tory councillors and Government.”
The public meeting takes place from 6pm to 7.30pm tomorrow at the community centre in Colne Road.
Coun Joe Cooney, leader of the council, said: “We approached the town and parish councils a long time ago explaining the situation. We were very clear about our position. We have less money every year and we can’t afford to fund everything.
“At that time, Brierfield Town Council had no interest in discussing it with us. Had they talked to us then this could have been sorted a long time ago as it has been done as well in the borough.”
