COUNTY council highway bosses have named a date for the latest phase of the £1.95million project to improve major gateways in Burnley.

Work will begin on adding traffic lights to the Barracks roundabout from Tuesday, April 22, with engineers pledging that most of the work will take overnight to minmise disruption for motorists.

The Lancashire Telegraph revealed last week that the lights were in the pipeline, to promote access to key economic sites.

County Coun John Fillis, county council highways cabinet member, said: “This investment will make a real difference to visitors’ first impressions of Burnley, and create a better environment for everyone who lives and works here.”

Coun Shah Hussain, Burnley Council’s regeneration cabinet member, said: “It’s vital to the local economy that we have good transport links.

“Motorists have already seen the benefits of putting traffic lights on the roundabout on the Padiham Road side of the motorway, in terms of improving traffic flow and cutting queues.

“The work at the Barracks roundabout will complete that scheme, and make access to, and from, the M65 that much smoother.”
