Burnley and Pendle Citizen: East Lancs volunteer police out in force East Lancs volunteer police out in force

SPECIAL constables across Lancashire took to the streets on Saturday and Sunday as part of National Specials Weekend.

The 171 volunteer police officers gave up their time for free, working a combined 1,450 hours in their communities.

The weekend highlighted the work specials do in support of regular officers, carrying out a range of activities to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.

Nigel Walters, the chief officer of Lancashire Special Constabulary, said: “The intention of this weekend was to raise awareness of the invaluable work that the special constabulary does.

“It was an impressive turnout across the county over both days, supporting regular operations and duties, plus an important training weekend was successfully hosted at police headquarters.”

Miranda Carruthers-Watt, Lancashire police chief executive, joined special constables in Darwen on Saturday night.

She said: "I was very impressed when I saw them in action.”

In what action? The report would have been more interesting if the chief executive had described, say, a sound baton-beating, a use-it-all CS spraying, what-have-you...
