The grand prix is coming to Nelson
NELSON is to host its first-ever pedal car grand prix later this year.
The town council is organising the event which will see children racing around the town centre streets in specially-designed cars.
The inspiration for the race has come from a similar event held in Darwen every year, which attracts hundreds of people into the town.
Town councillor Eileen Ansar said: “It’s a great idea and it should be a really good day and a fantastic event for the youngsters.
“The idea came from other nearby towns that have staged similar events which have been quite successful.
“It is all part of trying to get more events in the town centre which will attract more people into the town, which can only help boost trade.
“It’s great that the town council are looking to put on and fund events like this, because they are so important to Nelson.”
The pedal car grand prix will be open to children over the age of eight and will take place opposite Nelson Town Hall on Saturday, September 13, from 10am to 4pm.
Coun Ansar said: “We are hoping that some of the children will try to work on their own pedal cars and build their own vehicles, which would be fantastic to see.
“Hopefully we will get lots of youngsters entering which will mean a lot of extra trade in the town centre for that day.
“It will be good to make it a big day with a few extra stalls in the town centre and a real family atmosphere.”
Anybody wanting to take part should call Nelson Town Council on 01282 605015 or 07735 350735.
