EAST Lancashire pupils have had their engineering skills put through their paces by BAE Systems.
The annual Rotary International/BAE Systems Technology Tournament, which involved over 100 schools from Lancashire and Cumbria, took place on Friday with around 300 teams taking part at ten regional centres.
Fourteen schools took part in the Blackburn with Darwen, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley event at The Hollins Technology College in Accrington.
This year’s challenge was to build a gripping device so that a ‘meteorite’ (a tennis ball) could be safely handled from a distance.
It had to be picked up by one team member operating the device 1.5metres away and placed centrally on a target area.
Ribblesdale High School in Clitheroe won the Foundation section, Accrington Academy won the Intermediate section and Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Blackburn won the Advanced section.
The event was organised by Rotary Clubs from across East Lancashire.
