AN extended community growing scheme is being trialled in Todmorden and Walsden – on unused patches of land across the valley.

Amateur gardeners in the area already had a head start thanks to Incredible Edible Todmorden, the scheme which pioneered herb and salad crop beds along major routes.

And now Calderdale Council bosses are giving horticulturalists – with a taste for self-sufficiency – the chance to take part in a new pilot scheme.

Part of the council’s website, which is at www.calderdale.gov.uk, will have an interactive map showing municipal land which will be available for community fruit and vegetable growing.

Pam Warhurst, chairman of Incredible Edible Todmorden, said: “This is such good news.

“We are really chuffed to see how Calderdale Council has taken up the enthusiasm for community food growing and run with it.

“This will make it easier for residents to make the best of unused council land. Now it’s down to us all to just get on with it.”
