A POSTMASTER is hoping that pennies will add up to pounds as he seeks to raise £10,000 for Pendleside Hospice.

Steve Harvey, who runs Rosehill Post Office, in Manchester Road, Burnley, is relying on the old mantra ‘look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves’ in his fundraising efforts.

Mr Harvey, who has run the post office for over 20 years, wants people to drop off their small change with him as he seeks to collect one million pennies for the hospice.

He said: “Nearly everybody collects pennies or small change in a jar, and what better way to use them than donate them to a fantastic local charity?

“This is incredibly easy to do, anyone can do it. Just put the coins in a bag and drop them off here. It’s really simple.

“Added together we can raise a lot of money. If 80,000 people all donated £1 of their small change then we would raise a fortune.”

Mr Harvey’s campaign has already seen 119,000 pennies collected, raising £1,090 for the Hospice.

Previously he has collected £6,000 in pennies for the hospice, while the sales of books at the post office has raised more than £40,000 for the charity over the years.

“We’ve had great support from the local community already,” said Mr Harvey.

“There are posters in the window and people who use the post office on a regular basis know what we are doing.

“Some days we will have 20 people dropping bags of change off, other days we won’t have any.

“We want more people in Burnley and East Lancashire to help us now. This is a great and easy way to raise money for Pendleside Hospice.”
