A ‘PRE-APPRENTICESHIP’ hub was among the ideas discussed when Dr Cable visited one of Burnley’s top training schemes.

The business secretary started his visit to the town with a visit to Burnley Telematics, in Daneshouse Road, where he fielded questions from four of the group’s 15 apprentices.

Burnley Telematics founder and managing director, Ejaz Hussain, said: “At the moment, some employers are saying they are not able to take some of the kids on board from hard-to-reach areas because they don’t have the skill or the work ethic.

“The hub would be somewhere in the town centre where we can train them from the bottom up.”

Daneshouse with Stoneyholme Councillor Shah Hussain added: “I think one of the problems we have in the ethnic minority communities is that they look at the traditional routes of academia, but like Ejaz said, we need to look at the other type of work that’s available here in Burnley – the engineering and manufacturing.”
