ROMANCE was in the air when an East Lancashire man made the ‘perfect proposal’ to his future wife.

Mat Burrow whisked girlfriend Scarlett Jepson off to Muncaster Castle in the Lake District and had the words projected onto the historic castle walls.

Following a showreel of images, including their dog Millie and a recent scan picture of their baby girl who is due in May, Mat popped the question as Travis song, Flowers In The Window, played in the background.

“I had been planning to ask Scarlett for ages. We both love the Lakes so it was a perfect setting and something a bit different.

“It was nerve-wracking and I had been carrying the ring around with me all day, but I was happy with the display and everything went according to plan,” said Mat, who lives in Accrington and works at Pendle Vale College in Nelson.

Peter Frost-Pennington was partly responsible for the proposal running smoothly.

He lit up the castle with hearts and roses, and ran the slide show followed by ‘Scarlett will you marry me? Love Mat.’

“We went for a romantic evening stroll around the gardens and Scarlett watched as the walls of the castle lit up. Peter was great, he played along and gave nothing away, he made it perfect,” said 27-year-old Mat.

Muncaster Castle is well-known for its beautiful architecture and famous gardens, with the poet Ruskin describing the view from the Terrace as ‘the gateway to paradise’.

The couple plan to get married in three years and Scarlett, 22, said that her fiance’s proposal left her lost for words.

She said: “It was the best surprise ever. I was totally overwhelmed with the whole light show. I was speechless.

"Then when Mat’s question beamed all over the castle walls I turned to find him on one knee with the ring, I immediately shouted ‘yes of course’. I loved it, it was the perfect proposal.”
