THE chips definitely aren’t down for takeaway boss Amer Ansar – his fries have just been named among the best in the north-west.

His Market Street Chippy, in Cross Street, Nelson, was placed second in the region for the quality of its chips by The Potato Council.

Mr Ansar said judges were particularly impressed by the shop’s quality given that it has only been trading for 18 months.

He said: “Our staff have more than 25 years’ experience working in chip shops and the judges said the combination of fluffy insides and crispy outsides was impressive.

“I’m an accountant by trade but there was definitely a gap in the market for quality, traditional fish and chips in Nelson and we’re delighted to be doing do well.”
