A ‘BRUTAL’ man who meted out violence to a woman has been jailed for 10 months.

Burnley Crown Court had heard how ex-drug user Callam McMahon, 29, who had a record for violence, had punched the victim and threatened to kill her.

McMahon, also said to have previously had drink issues, had lashed out at his own mother, the hearing was told.

The defendant, of Dunoon Street, Burnley, had admitted putting a person in fear of violence. He had denied three charges of rape and one of attempted rape and had been cleared by a jury. McMahon had previous convictions for affray, making a threat to kill and common assault.

Kevin Donnelly, defending, said McMahon would say drink and drugs were not continuing issues with him.

The defendant had difficulty in managing his temper and accepted intervention was likely to assist him. McMahon, who lived with his mother, was due to start a college course which could lead to him becoming a computer network engineer.

Sentencing, Judge Andrew Woolman said he had found McMahon had dragged the victim round by her hair , kicked her repeatedly and punched her.

He told McMahon: “The matters you admitted and which I found proved are serious.I have come to the conclusion that only an immediate sentence of custody will suffice for this serious offending.”
