PEOPLE with long-term medical conditions are reminded to get vaccinated against seasonal flu as soon as possible.
Those with problems which put them at increased risk can greatly reduce the threat if they get the free vaccine at their GP surgery.
Last December and January 2013, critical care units saw many who should have been vaccinated who ended up so seriously ill that they required specialist ventilation to stay alive.
Most were young and middle-aged adults with conditions such as diabetes and asthma.
Getting flu when you already have a health condition can lead to serious complications and death.
Unlike other medication, the flu jab is an annual vaccine, changing every year to fight the latest strains.
Blackburn with Darwen Council health boss Mohammed Khan said: “Don’t underestimate flu. Have a vaccination as soon as possible. It is completely safe, and it can’t give you flu.”
