A HANDS-ON history session where Lancashire primary pupils become a medieval scribe by copying texts has won a top heritage education award.

The two-hour lesson, ‘The Scribe and the Seal’, is given by Lancashire County Council's archives and heritage learning services.

It is aimed at seven to 11-year-olds giving them the opportunity to explore and copy early Latin and Old English texts.

Ian Watson, Lancashire County Council's head of cultural services, said: "This is a very imaginative session where pupils enjoy a range of active participation, role play and hands-on activities, immersing themselves in the world of a medieval scribe.

"To help them understand the importance of the scribe's work, they explore and copy genuine medieval texts, make illuminated manuscripts and even create their own medieval seal.”

The session won the Sandford Award from the Heritage Education Trust.

County Councillor culture boss Marcus Johnstone said: “This award is thoroughly deserved and shows that our archives service is a great place to fire young people's imaginations and really bring history to life.”
