LANCASHIRE'S ‘50 Plus Assembly’ is calling for the establishment of a national Older People's Commissioner for England, similar to the existing one for children.
The group, involving representatives from older people's groups across the county, have called for the establishment of the official to shape the delivery of public services and ensure that older people's voices are heard.
Its deputy chairperson Mary Wilson White met with the Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles to put forward the case.
She said “He offered his support. Our next step is to contact each of the MPs across Lancashire.
“There is already an Older People's Commissioner standing up for older people in Northern Ireland and Wales.
"For too many older people, growing older is simply not what it should be. We want to make sure that the issues that matter most to older people are addressed."
Lancashire County Council's Older People Champion, Terry Aldridge, said:"At a time when public services are facing up to challenging budgets, we think it's even more important to establish an independent voice who can stand up for older people and speak out on their behalf.”
