Barnoldswick author, 31, beats dyslexia to produce coming-of-age novel

AN author from Barnoldswick has overcome dyslexia to write his first novel.
Damien Feral, 31, was working as a barista in Costa Coffee when he decided to put pen to paper on ‘Tales of Darkfern: Book 1 – The Last Ryder’.
He developed a love for storytelling and ideas would form in his head, but he said it was a ‘challenge’ as he began to write.
Damien said: “I didn’t really enjoy English at school so when I began writing I had to teach myself grammar.
“So it was a challenge but it was exciting as well. I make sculptures as well and when I create them, I usually tell the story and imagine the story in my head and that is when I decided I had to start writing it down.”
Damien was born in Durham and has spent time living in Edinburgh and Skipton before moving to Barnoldswick two years ago.
He left his job at Costa Coffee in October 2011 so he could focus full-time on writing his novel.
The book tells the story of teenage girl Harmony Ryder and her epic journey across a world ruled by witches.
“I have been into reading and books,” said Damien. “I used to think that it was a shame the authors never got to experience the story and the surprise like the reader.
“But I found writing this that I did experience those cliff-hanger moments as well.
“Tales of Darkfern is a coming-of-age story. It is a re-imagining of your classic fairytales.
“I’ve finished the second book in the series and the notes are all completed for the third one.
“Now I am writing full-time I’m finding it easier than doing it after work or on breaks.
“I’m not having to go back and correct as much now, either.”
Tales of Darkfern is released in early October, via CreateSpace Independent Publishing, and is available on Amazon.
