Self-made millionaire heaps praise on Burnley's workers
ONE of Burnley’s most recognisable faces has praised the skills of the town’s workers after it was named the most enterprising area in the UK.
Minibus guru and banking revolutionary Dave Fishwick, known to millions for his Bank of Dave TV programme, believes it is about time people sat up and took notice of Burnley’s positives.
The self-made millionaire, who runs Burnley Savings and Loans in Keirby Walk, has helped dozens of small businesses in the town get off the ground.
He said the cost-effectiveness of running a business in Burnley was an attractive factor for many up-and-coming firms.
Mr Fishwick said: “I think Burnley is a fantastic place. It’s second to none.
“There is a large skill bank of people here and lot of buildings and industry. The buildings in particular represent exceptionally good value.
“It is better and easier to recruit staff and access machinery in Burnley than in a lot of the bigger cities.”
Burnley was named the most enterprising area in the UK by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills last Tuesday. And Mr Fishwick praised the ‘entrepreneurial spirit’ of the town’s people.
He said: “We have a very resilient spirit up here.
“It’s a real hub of industry and the nation is only just starting to sit up and recognise that now. This award proves that Burnley people have got spirit and are making things worth in tough times.
“They are also trustworthy people.
“At ‘Bank of Dave’ we have fewer than one-quarter per cent of bad debt — that means more than 99 per cent of people we lend money to pay us back.
“Burnley is on the up.
“It's been better known for a few negative stories over the past decade but the people here are incredibly friendly.
“We’re turning the corner and it’s great to see the area shown in a much more positive light.”
