Flashing speed limit signs to be installed near East Lancashire schools
1:53pm Tuesday 3rd September 2013 in News
FLASHING speed limit signs have been installed at hundreds of Lancashire schools.
Lancashire County Council hopes the signs will remind drivers not to exceed 20mph in the areas surrounding schools, and help ensure children returning to school this week will be safer than ever.
The county council has, so far, introduced new lower limits – which operate only at the start and end of the day– outside 152 schools, as part of its programme to introduce 20mph as the normal limit in residential areas, and near to schools.
County Coun John Fillis, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Some schools already had measures to encourage slower speeds and alert drivers to the school but, with the new signs and part-time limits, we now have a consistent approach across the county for all schools where the main entrance is on a road with a limit higher than 2 mph.”
