Colne resident in smart meter battle
2:51pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in News
BRITISH Gas defended the roll-out of ‘smart meters’ after concerns were raised by Friends of the Earth campaigner Brian Jackson.
The Colne resident said he was called by the firm and told it was ‘mandatory’ to get a smart meter, a digital device which gives direct readings to the energy supplier.
Mr Jackson said he would change supplier if he was forced to change his meter, due to concerns about ‘radiation and increased surveillance’.
Louise Yarrall, for British Gas, said: “Smart meters are replacing standard ones by 2020 under a new government mandate. But we are not going to force these on anyone, customers are still able to keep their old meter if they wish, though they will need to be replaced every 10 or 15 years.”
She said smart meters will cut out estimated bills and include a display to help monitor and reduce energy use.
Fears over radiation were similar to those expressed over microwaves, she added.
