Challenge for young Burnley novice engineers

BURNLEY youngsters will be racing their own model racing cars this weekend as part of a national project aimed at encouraging interest in engineering.

Pupils at Heasandford, St Peter’s, Wellfield and Whittlefield primary schools have turned race engineers to design and build their own cars as part of the Primary Engineer Bloodhound programme, which mirrors the Bloodhound SSC current attempt to break the world land speed record.

This Saturday the cars will race against the clock along a track set up in the market hall.

Andrew Dean, from the market hall, said: “The Bloodhound project is aimed at bringing out the best of British engineering expertise.

“In Burnley engineers from Aircelle are working with the pupils to help them create their own racing cars.

“These links are vital in bringing a real engineering context to the activity.

“The cars have to be built to a certain specification and must be powered by a stored energy system.

“That could involve an elastic band or a balloon; something that can power their car.”
