High hopes for rope centre and zip wire in Colne

AMBITIOUS plans for a new rope activity centre have been unveiled for Pendle Leisure Centre, in Colne.
Chief executive Phil Storey has applied to the borough council for permission to build the attraction on the site of an all-weather pitch, off Crown Way.
One of the chief features would be a 60-metre zip wire, descending from a wooden tower, which will also incorporate a climbing wall.
Elsewhere there would be two courses – one low-level, and one hexagonal high-level construction - compr-ising a series of rope swings and platforms.
Trust officials have enlisted Dorset-based specialists JM Adventure to provide the plans for the Colne centre. Mr Storey hopes the development will create two full-time posts, and four part-time positions, according to documents submitted with the application. The centre would usually be open from 8am to 9.30pm, borough planners have also been told.
Leisure trust bosses have so far not revealed how the centre will be funded.
But according to JM Adventure’s prices, constructing the tower will cost up to £80,000, the zip wire is around £12,000, with additional elements of the high and low rope courses priced at between £28,000 and £36,000.
Neighbours have already expressed fears that the rope centre may exacerbate existing problems with noise and floodlighting.
The main activity tower, with a sail roof, would be located opposite the Lloyd BMW garage, at the far end of the leisure centre site.
