Artist appeals for help sourcing exhibits for Gawthorpe Hall exhibition

AN ARTIST is appealing for help to source historic props for a new exhibition at Gawthorpe Hall.
The hall is to display pieces by international artist Catherine Bertola, who will fill rooms with several installations.
Catherine, who has created previous works using household dust, was inspired on an initial visit to the hall by the Edwardian photograph albums on display that portray Gawthorpe and the Shuttleworth family.
She is re-staging a series of scenes from the history of Gawthorpe Hall as part of her commission, Flicker, which opens in March.
Catherine is currently searching for props from the area to help her stage the scenes as authentically as possible.
Among the items wanted are an early 17th century chest, bench, stool and high-backed chairs.
Also needed are an early 17th century rug, a mid 17th century map, late 18th century farming tools, a Victorian coal-scuttle, Edwardian vases, an Edwardian table-cloth and 1950s toys.
The artist has previously had solo shows at the Bronte Parsonage Museum, Haworth, and the Galerie Fricke, Berlin.
She said: “I’m fascinated by how photography captures and preserves fleeting moments of time, allowing us a glimpse into the past from the present.
“The images in the albums provided a different view of the rooms I had walked through, illustrating how they were once inhabited, filled with the clutter of everyday life as opposed to the stripped back and orderly manner in which the rooms are now presented.
“I am interested in how the space can be seen from different perspectives, through the eyes of different people who have occupied the space over the course of its history.”
The final pieces she creates will be made with the involvement of the Padiham community who live close to the hall.
The work will acknowledge the Shuttleworth family who called Gawthorpe home for over 300 years, as well as the extensive textile and costume collections housed inside.
