Derelict Pendle cottages to be sold
2:25pm Tuesday 30th October 2012 in News
COUNCIL bosses in Pendle have defended plans to sell off a row of derelict cottages on one of the main approaches into Brierfield.
Opposition councillors fear releasing the five homes, in Burnley Road, for a private sale will still leave them redundant until the housing market picks up.
Neighbours have also complained about rats and an accumulation of litter in association with the cottages, which have been boarded up for some time.
But the borough’s executive has now rubberstamped plans to sell off the row, after deciding against adding it to their ‘Improvement for Sale’ programme.
Council leader Coun Joe Cooney said: “The cost of refurbishing them would have far exceeded their final value, which would have left us with a shortfall.
“So putting the properties up for sale was the most financially viable option. To ensure the cottages are restored sensitively we are selling them under a development licence.”
