HOMEOWNERS in rural areas have been warned to secure their houses after thieves targeted two cottages.
Police urged home-owners to ensure their alarm systems worked and windows were secure after raiders stole more than £1,000 worth of goods from one cottage and failed to get into another.
Officers said thieves failed to get into a cottage in Todmorden Road, Briercliffe, between 4pm on September 30 and 7pm on October 4 because of the secure window locks.
But on September 4 thieves broke into a cottage in Burnley Road, in Cliviger, stealing a laptop, nine-carat gold and diamond bracelet, Nokia phone, cash and CDs together worth £1,255.
Sgt Martin Selway said: "This is the second rural cottage property targeted this week, which is unusual for this area.
"We would advise people to ensure their alarm systems are up to scratch and their windows secure." Anyone with information should contact Burnley police on 01282 425001.
