A TEN-mile walk around the borough boundary marked the start of Haslingden’s Sports Week in 1968.

The first event of its kind, 100 people took part, with the oldest competitor, 76-year-old Annie Taylor, of Manchester Road, Ewood Bridge, finishing in last place.

They trekked up some of the biggest hills around the town, including Hog Lowe Pike and Bull Hill.

The second event of the week was a single wicket cricket competition, at Houghton’s Road playing fields, which was won by Ken Gregory, with Barry Neild runner-up; and was followed by fishing, football, bowls, judo and tennis contests.
